By the mid-1950s roughly 150,000 Davidson County residents lived in unsewered subdivisions. The countywide project to extend sewers through the suburbs began soon after the 1963 consolidation and ran into the early 1990s, working outward from the built-up core. Where it arrived, septic disappeared. Where it did not, those systems are still in the ground — and many of them are now 25 to 55 years old.
There is an older rule underneath that one. In 1946 the county raised minimum residential lot sizes to half an acre specifically to give septic drain fields room over Davidson County's shallow limestone base, and required larger lots still where soils were poor — naming Oak Hill among them.
